Terrorism in the Middle East By Jordan Giese Wyatt Jones Bayley Johnson Austin Rose Terrorism in the Middle East

ISIS - The Islamic State of Iraq Terrorist group currently at war with Russia, the U.S, France, and the United Kingdom, as well as other Middle Eastern countries. Currently at war with Al-Qaeda Known for its videos posted on Social Media sites Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is the founder of ISIS

Main Beliefs They believe they are doing these things to achieve a Utopia. The main leader of Isis today, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, believes he is fighting on behalf of all Muslims. They wish to cleanse the world of those “against” Islam. They believe killing those not for their “cause” is helping the world become a better and more beautiful place.

Al-Qaeda Sunni Islamist multi-national organization Founded in 1988 Founders consist of Osama Bin Laden Ayman al-Zawahiri Saeed al-Masri Fought against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan Behind the attacks on 9/11

September 11th, 2001 Tragic event Al-Qaeda was behind that involved destroying the Twin Towers Over 3,000 casualties (343 were firefighters) Project run by Osama Bin Laden Four planes were hijacked Two went into the Towers One went into the Pentagon One crashed into a field in Pennsylvania

Al-Qaeda vs ISIS ALIKE Terrorist groups based in the Middle East Both based off of Muslim beliefs DIFFERENT ISIS often is much more violent than Al-Qaeda is Al-Qaeda focused on battles elsewhere, while ISIS focuses on battles on its home grounds

What is the Taliban Formed in 1994 Founder Mullah Mohammed Omar The group's aim is to impose its interpretation of Islamic law on Afghanistan and remove foreign influence from the country. Exact number of forces unknown Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada new leader

History 1980s we supplied the Mujahadeen against the soviet union's red army 1997 Forges alliance with Al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden August 1998 Taliban controls 90% of Afghanistan 2001 Taliban loses Afghanistan to U.S. forces September 10 2011 explosive device kills 77 U.S. troops January 25, 2017 sends a message to president Trump telling him to withdraw forces from Afghanistan

What is being done to stop it The United States have troops in Afghanistan Were at war for over a decade (2001-2014) Not technically at war right now December 2015 we bombed the Taliban twice

Why the Middle East hates the U.S Since 1980, U.S. has invaded/ bombed/ occupied 14 Islamic countries We supported the Jews during the 1947-48 civil war for Israel for political power Corrupt government blames the U.S. for their problems 35.8% of the Middle East are illiterate...easy to manipulate The U.S. continues to support the wrong people
