U.M. ARMY Participating Church Training Welcome youth/parents/volunteers to this training, hand out UM ARMY and BASIC Travel Guides—1/participant; it is our hope that this training will ready you for the mission field you are serving in this summer—although our travel guides cover a lot—each camp is unique with blessings abounding.

Providing Christ-centered missions that serve people in need and promote spiritual growth and leadership development in youth and young adults. This is our mission statement; this is who we are—everything we do is measured by this statement; we are actively teaching our youth how to help their neighbors.

Why do YOU UM ARMY? Why I UM ARMY… Share a camp story of your own; ask youth to share their camp stories and/or experiences from other mission/service trips.

Who are we? UM ARMY is a 501c3 non-profit run by a volunteer board of directors offering college, high school, middle school and family mission camp experiences. We are a connectional ministry with the UMC Speak to your role on the board of directors and how we approach planning camps

Types of Missions Offered: BASIC Middle School Camps work on and for area nonprofits and churches UM ARMY High School Camps provide home repairs to area residents UM ARMY Homefront college and young adult camp provide home repairs to area residents UM ARMY Family Camp provide home repairs to area residents Self explanatory

Dress Code Because BASIC and UM ARMY are typically going into communities, churches and non-profits, we strive not to offend anyone. UM ARMY uses the words “modest”, “conservative” and “appropriate” to describe clothing that is suitable for our work camps. All participants will wear appropriate clothing at camp for safety reasons and to reflect that we are a Christ centered organization. Clothing with objectionable printing, such as alcohol and tobacco advertising, offensive words or designs, are not allowed. Utilize page 11 in your travel guide to go over specifics on dress code

Conduct Youth Covenant of Conduct Adult Covenant of Conduct Safe Sanctuary/Trusted con Confianza—we define adults as anyone 23 years of age and older; follow UMC safe sanctuary policy, GROUP ROSTER sign off by the senior pastor is our check that all attending have met your church’s safe sanctuary policy. Participation Youth covenant of conduct is on page 14, adult covenant of conduct is on page 19, each church within the SWTC has their own safe sanctuary policies that meet the minimum requirements put forth by the conference office—the senior pastors sign off of the group roster is our check—take a group roster with you; participation can page 17

Work Teams 2 adults/team Teams are made up of youth from different churches attending camp Travel everywhere with your work team Daily Leadership Roles: Team Leader(s) Devotional Leader(s) Safety Leader(s) Tools/Materials Leader(s) Food Leader(s) Navigator(s) Clarify the difference in WTA vs. WTLeaders—we are fulfilling our mission statement through these leadership roles. BASIC Camps have 2 leaders/day as opposed to High School camps. Pages 20-22 in travel guide should help here

Why we UM ARMY… Revitalize Depressed Areas/Communities Give a boost of energy and excitement to host churches Teach our youth how to communicate with their elders Teach our youth how to use power tools and accomplish routine maintenance and simple construction Break down racial and socio-economic lines Truly teach the youth how to be Christ’s hands and feet to their neighbors and live out the Greatest Commandment
