Carlisle Flood: 2005 Which physical and human features can you see that could contribute to making flooding worse in this area?

Why did Carlisle Flood? Use the evidence given to answer the question, “Why did Carlisle flood?” Due to intense rainfall over a short period in January 2005, the discharge of the River Eden, in Carlisle increased from 121 cumecs to 1,090 cumecs within 48 hours. Bankfull level Lag time The river level rose to 6 metres above normal channel flow, flooding large areas of the city. Surface flow Discharge Through flow Groundwater flow Urgent action was required to prevent similar damage occurring again. Rainfall Time

Study the hydrograph to answer the questions. When was the maximum amount of rainfall? When was the peak flow? Work out the lag time. Why would such a short lag time cause problems for Carlisle?

What is happening to the area. Where is flooding greatest and least What is happening to the area? Where is flooding greatest and least? What are the primary and secondary impacts of flooding?

If you had to build new houses around Carlisle, where would you build them?
