FIGURE 1 Radioimmunoassay-determined levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (panels A and B), dehydroepiandrosterone (panels C and D), and cortisol (panels E and F) after an 8-hour incubation of fresh adrenal minces with several doses of insulin and testosterone in serum-free medium with 10 μM pregnenolone substrate and 1 μM ACTH. The data represent the combined responses (average steroid level ± standard error) from four female donors (ages 25–57 years), with each donor adrenal incubated in triplicate for each challenge dose. Asterisks indicate significant (analysis of variance with Fisher’s least significant difference test, P≤.05) differences in steroid production relative to the zero-dose incubation. Hines.
