AIM: How has human migration and population changed in recent times? .

Population Growth LDCs in general have a higher percentage of population growth than MDCs. Some MDCs have actually seen their population decline.

Total Fertility Rate v. Crude Birth Rate TFR –average number of babies a woman has in her lifetime. CBR – number of live births per thousand people per year

Refugee vs. Immigrant Immigrants willingly leave their country Refugees are forced to leave

Push vs. Pull Factors Push Pull

Malthus

Exponential Exponential growth (including exponential decay) occurs when the growth rate of a mathematical function is proportional to the function's current value. In the case of a discrete domain of definition with equal intervals it is also called geometric growth or geometric decay (the function values form a geometric progression). The exponential growth model is also known as the Malthusian growth model.

Arithmetic (Statistics) A rate of increase (or decrease) by a constant amount per time period, for example a population increase of X persons per year, year after year. Compare to Exponential Growth and Sigmoid Growth.

AIM: Why do distinct cultures develop in different places?

At the same time that English is At the same time that English is solidifying its role as the world’s premier lingua franca, lesser-used minority languages (such as Welsh, Basque, and Inukitut) are undergoing revival. Discuss 3 distinct factors promoting the revival of minority languages in the face of globalization.

Language Indo-European languages include both Romance and Germanic languages -50% of the world’s population speaks them. Dialects of English vary from city to city where English is the native language. Thousands and Thousands are in danger of going extinct. Genocide, acculturation and cultural collapse.

Basics Syncretic – refers to something such as a cultural tradition that borrows from multiple sources. (Santa Claus, Angels and Demons, Hell)

Ethnicity and Pop Culture People’s outward traits say nothing about their cultural identity. MC Tantrum

Ethnicity and Pop Culture In some parts of the USA, whites are no longer the majority. We are a true multi-cultural and multi-racial nation. Pop Culture is similar everywhere. Folk culture is not.

Hip Hop Culture has become Pop Culture

Religion Universal religions seek to unite people from different backgrounds under one faith. Many animist religions take on shamanistic aspects. Not all animist religions are shamanistic.

Culture and tourism Identify and explain ONE way that tourism has diminished the landscape distinctiveness. Identify and explain ONE way that tourism has enhanced regional landscape distinctiveness.
