Chemical Symbols The element names can be very long to write over and over. Scientist have agreed on a system of symbols to represent the elements. Some of these symbols have 1, 2 or 3 letters. The first letter is ALWAYS capitalized and the others (if there are any) are ALWAYS lowercase.
