Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy Lower Division Courses Upper Division Courses

Learning Objectives Sample CLOs from Linda Suskie’s Assessing Student Learning: A Common Sense Guide (Jossey-Bass, 2009) and from Cal Poly courses: Apply economic principles to everyday life. Explain the impact of the Korean War on U.S.-East Asian relations today. Identify an audit problem in a financial statement, and recommend ways to address it. Predict what is likely to happen when two chemicals are combined, and justify the prediction. Design a community service project. Write a poem that uses imagery and structure typical of early-nineteenth- century American poets. Accurately solve engineering problems using methods from perturbation theory Compare how structure and function are related for key structures of the human nervous system

Assessments Assessments for each CLO CLO: Predict what is likely to happen when two chemicals are combined, and justify the prediction. Assessment: Pre-lab notebooks, midterm exam, final exam In general, the assessment method(s) should not be the same for every CLO (e.g., don’t just copy and paste Homework, Test, Final exam to every CLO)

One-Year Catalog Cycle Approaches for moving from two-year to one-year catalog cycle Agile approach Two-year catalog cycle occurs over 23 months – May 1 kick-off for proposals that are published in the catalog 23 months later One-year catalog cycle is based on continuous review – program proposals received by June 1 are published in the catalog 10 months later 7/16/2019

One-Year Catalog Cycle Approaches for moving from two-year to one-year catalog cycle Stepped approach New courses may be proposed on a rolling, quarterly basis Once a new course is fully approved in the system, it can be added to a program proposal Course proposals fully approved in advance will make editing and reviewing programs easier 7/16/2019

One-Year Catalog Example: 2021-22 Catalog Today – May 2020 Departments submit proposals for courses, new programs, or program deactivations Departments, colleges, and university committees (e.g. ASCC) review proposals on an ongoing basis Courses fully approved by April 1 can be used in making edits to programs April – May Departments edit programs in Curriculum Management system Departments/colleges approve proposals by June 1 Fall USCP Review Committee, GE Governance Board, and Academic Senate Curriculum Committee review proposals Office of the Registrar completes the updating of courses in the student information system 7/16/2019
