Tangible Objectives Aligned to TEKS Carrie Arce, Social Studies

Why should your objectives be aligned to TEKS? It is the state standard (there are TEKS for every class except the BioMed CTE) It helps students and teachers stay on track This is the foundation of state and Harmony Assessment Why should your objectives be aligned to TEKS?

What makes an objective tangible? Specific - What do you want to accomplish? Why do you want to accomplish it? What are the benefits? Who is involved? Measurable - How will you know when it is accomplished? What tools will you use to measure progress? Attainable - How can your goal be accomplished? Is it action-oriented? What knowledge and skills are needed to reach this goal? Relevant - Does your goal seem worthwhile? Is it realistic? Time-bound - When will this happen? How often? Is there a time frame for you to reach your goal?

Let's look at your TEKS Open your TEKS from TEA and the Harmony Curriculum page Identify the TEKS that will be used. 3A: analyze political issues such as Indian policies, the growth of political machines, civil service reform, and the beginnings of Populism

Review the nouns 2. Clarify the noun that you want students to learn…. Indian Policies Political Machines Civil Service reform Populism Other terms that are related that student have already learned: Gilded Age Industrialization Railroads Labor Union Entrepreneurship Big Business

Focusing on the verb of the TEKS! 3. Identify the verb in the TEKS. In Bloom’s Taxonomy, there are six levels of learning.

Additional Criteria 3. Add additional criteria to indicate how or when the outcome will be observable to add context for the student. How are you going to make this objective “tangible?” *If you are using multiple TEKS, this is the time to examine and review the nouns and verbs. *This is where we tie it all together with and make it a SMART goal.

Refocus on a SMART goal. Specific - What do you want to accomplish? Why do you want to accomplish it? What are the benefits? Who is involved? Measurable - How will you know when it is accomplished? Begin with Students will__________ (based on the verb in the TEKS and Bloom’s Taxonomy) ____________________________ (fill in the rest with content) through _________________ (this is the end product, assessment) Students will compare Indian policies, the growth of political machines, civil service reform, and the beginnings of Populism through completion of the graphic organizer (provided.)
