Natural Energy Resources Notebook Page 2

Warm Up Jan 30, 2017 1. What are 5 renewable natural energy resources? 2. What is a lobbyist? How do you think lobbyists affect the total amount of natural energy resources used in the United States? Objectives: 8.P.2.1/2.2 TSWU the positive and negative aspects of different energy resources and the consequences of the depletion of nonrenewable energy resources. Essential Question: What are the positive and negative aspects of different types of energy resources.

-Pollution -Recycle -Conserve Warm Up January 30 -Pollution -Recycle -Conserve The reusing of materials that people would otherwise throw away such as paper, glass, plastics, and certain metals. The process of saving or protecting a natural resource. The release of harmful substances into the air, land, or water. Objectives: 8.P.2.1/2.2 -TSWU the different types of natural energy resources. Essential Question: -Which energy resource is the most efficient and causes the least amount of pollution in the environment?

Warm Up January 31 Directions: If the statement is false rewrite the statement to make it true. Do not just write true or false… T/F: The same forces that have changed earth in the past are still changing the earth today and will continue to change the earth in the future. T/F: Half lives of elements can be used to determine the relative ages of rocks and fossils. T/F: The use of living organisms to create products and tools that make life easier is known as biotechnology.

Warm Up Jan 30, 2017 What is a lobbyist? Lobbyists are hired and paid by special interest groups, companies, nonprofits and even school districts to exert influence over elected officials at all levels of government. Why do lobbyists play an important role for our government? President Donald Trump nominated Scott Pruitt, the attorney general of the oil and gas-intensive state of Oklahoma, to head the Environmental Protection Agency. Is this a good or bad decision? Why?

Warm Up and Spiral February 1 How do nonrenewable energy resources affect our planet? SPIRAL: What is a greenhouse gas? Can you provide an example? How do nonrenewable resources relate to the amount of greenhouse gases found in our atmosphere? Where can we find past evidence of this? Objectives: 8.P.2.1/2.2 -TSWU the different types of natural energy resources. Essential Question: -Which energy resource is the most efficient and causes the least amount of pollution in the environment?

Warm Up and Spiral February 2 Directions: If the statement is false rewrite the statement to make it true. Do not just write true or false… T/F: Fossil fuels come directly from fossils. T/F: There is no evidence that global warming has occurred on our planet in the past. Objectives: 8.P.2.1/2.1 -TSWU the advantages and disadvantages of using fossil fuels. Essential Question: -What are the advantages and disadvantages of using fossil fuels?

What does it mean to lobby for something?… DQ: If you were on the student council, how would you realistically argue to get less school days? Write your argument. The act of attempting to influence decisions made by officials in the government. They seek to persuade members of the government. Think about companies that would pay lobbyists to help influence government officials. ???BUT WHY???

What do lobbyists do? WHAT DOES A LOBBYIST DO? Objectives and Essential Question 1/27-1/29 DQ: If you were on the student council, how would you realistically argue to get less school days? Write your argument. How is this similar to lobbyists working for major companies or special interest groups? Objectives: 8.P.2.1/2.2 TSWU the positive and negative aspects of different energy resources and the consequences of the depletion of nonrenewable energy resources. Essential Question: What are the positive and negative aspects of different types of energy resources.

There’s a lot of different ENERGY SOURCES There’s a lot of different ENERGY SOURCES. EACH has its own INDUSTRY LOBBYISTS! RENEWABLE—replaces itself faster than we use it NON-RENEWABLE—we use it faster than it can be replaced. HYDRO (water) POWER WIND (air) SOLAR (sunlight) GEOTHERMAL COAL MINERALS OIL NATURAL GAS BIO-MASS TOPSOIL NUCLEAR

What does this political cartoon say about the United States?

What do lobbyist do… The act of attempting to influence decisions made by officials in the government.

Divide up into your Cooperative groups. Each group is going to represent ONE ENERGY SOURCE.

Monday/Tuesday we lobby for our natural energy resource & VOTE! Today, you will research what your energy source has the BEST to offer. Captain: 1 person leads tech research (all contribute) Recorder: All students records information on guided notes Researcher: All students must research Presenter: 1 person presents (lobbies) PERSUASIVELY! Attacker: 1 person challenges other industry competitors. Today, your group will research the advantages of your energy resource and the disadvantages of your competitors’ resources. Monday/Tuesday we lobby for our natural energy resource & VOTE!
