English Language Arts 9 “The Writing Process”

Agenda for the Day The Outline…questions about the process? Thesis and Introduction Any Questions?

Thesis Statement The thesis statement is a sentence in your introduction which states your purpose. A thesis statement is NOT: a question a sentence fragment figurative language (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, etc.) vague or overly general a statement which starts with "I think" or "I will" muddled or incoherent A thesis statement must be a statement.

What Should It Do? Predicts: the thesis statement tells your reader what is coming next Controls: the thesis statement sets boundaries; you cannot step out of the boundaries Obligates: the thesis statement makes a promise that you will prove or explain your statement.

Research and Bibliography

Group Sharing?? NEXT TUTORIAL: Work together in groups and share your thesis statement with your partner. Help each other to ensure that your statement is controlled, it obligates and predicts. Move on to the introduction…..if there is time.
