Introductory Chemistry Chemistry-140 Lecture 1 Chemistry 59-140, Fall Term 2001 Introductory Chemistry Lectures: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 12:30 - 1:20 PM Room 1120, Erie Hall Professor: Dr. P. J. Dutton (Room 354, Essex Hall) dutton@uwindsor.ca ext:3549 Text: Chemistry & Chemical Reactivity, 4th Edition by J. C. Kotz and P. Treichel, Jr.

Chemistry-140 Lecture 1 Course Outline This course will cover some of the basic concepts of chemistry including atoms, molecules and ions, solution stoichiometry, introductory thermochemistry, electronic structure of atoms, basic chemical bonding and molecular geometry, periodic properties of the elements and the properties of gases, liquids & solids.

Chemistry-140 Lecture 1 The lecture portion of this course will be based on topics covered in chapters 1-13 (omit 11) in the course textbook. Although the textbook sequence will be followed fairly closely, it should be noted that the content of the course and the lectures will not necessarily be limited by the scope of the text. Thus, the full content of the course can only be realized by regular attendance at class.

Chemistry-140 Lecture 1 The end-of-chapter problems that are assigned have been selected to highlight the topics covered in each chapter. Since the term tests and examination will be primarily composed of comparable problems, careful attention to these problems and their solutions is VERY highly recommended.

Chemistry-140 Lecture 1 Important Notes You MUST pass the final examination to obtain a passing grade in the course. Attendance at the laboratory is mandatory. Inexcusable absenteeism or incomplete laboratory reports will result in a grade of INCOMPLETE in the laboratory which will result in a grade of INCOMPLETE in the course.

Tests, Examinations and Grading Chemistry-140 Lecture 1 Tests, Examinations and Grading Term Test #1 (75 min) 15 % October 12th, 2001 (6:30 PM) Term Test #2 (75 min) 15 % November 9th, 2001 (6:30 PM) Final Exam (3 h) 50 % December 10th, 2001 (12:00 PM) Laboratory 20 %

Chemistry-140 Lecture 1 Grades To determine the final grade in this course the accumulated mark as a percentage (%) will be converted into a letter grade based approximately on the following - 90-100 A+ 85-89 A 80-84 A- 77-79 B+ 73-76 B 70-72 B- 66-69 C+ 63-65 C 60-62 C- 57-59 D+ 53-56 D 50-52 D- 35-49 F 0-34 F-

Information Regarding the Laboratories: Chemistry-140 Lecture 1 Information Regarding the Laboratories: Laboratories will start the week of Monday September 17th, 1999. You will be doing an experiment!!! (Expt #1) Check the bulletin board on the first floor of Essex Hall for information.
