Ruben and his family live in the Altiplano, high up in the Andes Ruben and his family live in the Altiplano, high up in the Andes. They grow food to eat, but this is not as easy as it used to be. Unpredictable weather and poor soil has made growing food very difficult.   Not having vegetables left the family hungry and often left Ruben tired and struggling to stay healthy.    CAFOD is supporting a project in Ruben’s community, which makes sure that Ruben has the right to nutritious food. Ruben’s family were given tools to build their own greenhouse. And they have learnt about good farming practices. Halima, 8 years Myanmar to Bangladesh Halima’s family fled violence in Myanmar, along with more than 500,000 other Rohingya people. She is now in a refugee camp in Bangladesh. Halima’s mother, Fatema, says the family have been surviving on rice and potatoes and as a result the children are malnourished. A few years ago there was no clean water and soap at Guti’s school A few years ago there was no clean water and soap at Guti’s school. Children used to get sick and miss school.   But things have changed. With CAFOD’s support, the local water pump has been repaired. The children now have clean water, and can spend time learning instead of walking for miles to collect water. They also have new sinks and soap, so the children are able to keep clean and stay healthy. They are able to concentrate better in class. The children learn about the importance of water and hygiene and are now teaching other children at the school how to stay clean and healthy.    Guti, 15 years Uganda

A few years ago, Svondo’s family did not have enough food A few years ago, Svondo’s family did not have enough food. With training from CAFOD’s partner, Svoncdo’s community learned how to set up a community garden. They were given seeds to plant and fences to protect the crops from animals. The community garden is growing well. Svondo is growing up strong and healthy. He loves eating peanut butter! Svondo’s mum now grows enough vegetables to sell some of them. With the extra money she can buy things her family needs. They have bought a solar panel. This means the family now have light so Svondo can do homework in the evenings. Mohammed, 6 years Syria to Lebanon Mohammed’s family fled from Damascus in Syria to the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. “…the army entered our home and we had to leave… I didn’t bring any toys with me. We didn’t bring anything with us. We bought some clothes in Damascus then we came here quickly by car.” Mohammed Mohammed’s school, supported by CAFOD, gives emergency education to Syrian children who are not in school, or need extra help. Jacqueline, 10 years El Salvador Jacqueline lives with her family in the west of El Salvador. When Jacqueline was little, her family barely had enough to get by. With your help, CAFOD have been supporting her family for many years, so they can have the things they need to grow their way out of poverty. Through training, Jacqueline’s family have learned how to grow their own seeds as well as better ways to grow food. They now grow more than 40 crops and have what they need. What a success story!
