Publishing is one of the MOST IMPORTANT parts of academic career Developing knowledge dissemination skills early on will lead to academic success Funding proposals can and do rely on academic excellence, expressed through publications Message

Over 40 years of publishing, over 200 publications in books, book chapters, public magazines, journals, conferences, and workshops Vice-President Publications Servjces and Products Board for two years. Founder and co-Chair for International Conference Series IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Network Analysis and Mining Author of several books in interval analysis, global optimization and modeling. Spearheaded IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, IEEE Cloud Computing Magazine, Transactions on Big Data C-Editor of Encyclopedia of Social Network Analysis and Mining PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

Publishing – why important Provides community with current state of the art research Allows to disseminate knowledge through journals/conference/summer school participation Allows to learn and share knowledge, collaborate

Which skills are essential Know your audience! Know what appeared previously in the same journals Never include any statements that are not proven/speculative/incorrect or not verifiable Writing and polishing article sometimes as important as performing research itself!

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Two main parts Multiple choice Free form part Overall ranking (0 to 100%) Novelty Clarity Applicability Presentation Methodology Free form part Paper contribution Any minor or major changes Can be other parts: confidential comments to Editor-in-Chief, ethical consideration, reporting plagiarism, conflict of interests

Evaluation Conference: By program committee plus external reviewers if needed Depends on venue Can be between 2 to 7 people Can be up to 4 rounds Journal: Editor-in-Chief Assigns Associate Editors Assigns Area reviewers Assigns sub reviewers Receives reports Communicates feedback

FEEDBACK ACCEPT –GREAT!  ACCEPT with minor corrections – Very Good! ACCEPT with major corrections –some work but OK! Needs resubmission – more work is needed Needs resubmission tom other Journal –REJECT, but can be argued WEAK REJECT – not yet there STRONG reject – not good 
