Comparative Essay A.P. World Aim: How can we analyze the major similarities and differences between the Umayyad and Abbasid Dynasties? Comparative Essay A.P. World

A.P. Central The comparative essay focuses on developments in at least two societies or regions. It relates to major themes in the course, such as social and gender structures, interactions between or among societies, political organization, or economic systems. Comparative questions always require analysis of reasons for the similarities and differences identified. Students may have the opportunity to choose different cases for comparisons.

Rubric Comparative Essay 1. Has acceptable thesis. 1 (Addresses comparison of the issues or themes specified.) 2. Addresses all parts of the question, though not necessarily evenly or thoroughly. 2 (Addresses most parts of the question: for example, deals with differences but not similarities.) 3. Substantiates thesis with appropriate historical evidence.2 (Partially substantiates thesis with appropriate historical evidence.) 4. Makes at least one relevant, direct comparison between/ among societies. 1 5. Analyzes at least one reason for a similarity or difference identified in a direct comparison.1 Expands beyond basic core of 1–7 points. The basic core score of 7 must be achieved before a student can earn expanded core points.

Instructions: Comparative Essay 1)Using your text and your homework come up with three categories to compare these 2 dynasties. 2)After you have chosen those three categories- research the ways in which those dynasties responded in those cases. Find similarities and differences. Make note of the historical details… 3)After you have done step ½ you must go back and find the significance of those actions. This step is crucial- it is the analysis. The “SO What”!!!
