Presentation transcript:

The Federation of Women Lawyers-Kenya (FIDA Kenya) is a non-profit, non-partisan and non-governmental membership organization committed to the creation of a society that is free of all forms of discrimination against women through provision of legal aid, women’s rights monitoring, advocacy, education and referral. ID 250 LAND OWNERSHIP:USE OF INFORMAL JUSTICE MECHANISMS IN RESETTLING OF WIDOWS IN KENYA Author(s) : AGNES ROGO Affiliation : FEDERATION OF WOMEN LAWYERS (FIDA) KENYA Author’s Email Address: agnesn@fidakenya.org www.fidakenya.org FIDA Kenya is a non-profit, non governmental organization whose membership is female lawyers practicing in Kenya. INTRODUCTION Women have been included as stake holders and decision makers in community Council of Elders. This was traditionally men’s domain. The capacities of the Elders are enhanced as they are sensitized to legal provisions with regard to equality of the genders and women's legal access to own and deal with land. Women who would have been left homeless due to oppressive cultural practices like widow eviction are resettled in their homes. RESULTS Kenya is a country with plural justice systems. The use of the informal justice mechanisms is instrumental in helping women gain access to their land rights.
