Review of Questionnaire Research Answers Chair of TFRA

The aim of this questionnaire research is to clarify the current status and future position of each country. 11 countries and manufacturers of 7 countries answered the questionnaire. This presentation shows a review of the questionnaire research.

Is there any regulation of reversing alarm in each category? Q1. Is there any regulation of reversing alarm in each category? In Austria, M3, N3 and N2 are mandatory. However, this does not apply for the vehicles mounted camera. In South Korea, N3 and O4 are mandatory. At least one of the three devices (Back-up camera, Parking sensor, reversing alarm) shall be installed from 2019. School bus is mandatory in Turkey, Spain and Russia. Most of the countries answered to maintain current status or "prohibited" as the future.

Is tonal sound reversing alarm popular? Q2.(a) Is tonal sound reversing alarm popular? This question is to research adoption rate of tonal sound type of RA. Most of the answers are "No". →Based on the answers of Q.5, "No" may be due to the fact that the number of vehicles mounted RA are very few. Some countries answered "Yes". (b) Is broad band sound reversing alarm popular? All of the answers are "No" except Australia. Q3. Are there any benefit due to equipment of reversing alarm? (Discount of insurance premium etc.) All of the answers are "No".

Volume adjustment method Q4. Volume adjustment method Pause switch Some countries answered they have RA system with Pause switch. Most of the countries answered "No“ as the future. There are some opinions which Pause switch will be unnecessary in case that SPL will be balanced with ambient environment or other safety devices (i.e. Camera) will be mounted. In case that other safety devices are installed, there is a room for discussion how to treat RA.

Volume adjustment method (con't) Q4. Volume adjustment method (con't) Re-operation (after deactivation of the vehicle) in previous driver choice Re-operation (after deactivation of the vehicle) in ON The purpose of these two questions are to research how to treat automatic return from pause switch or low mode to normal mode. There are many negative opinions that drivers choose it arbitrarily, and also there are many opinions that it should automatically return to "ON".

Volume adjustment method (con't) Q4. Volume adjustment method (con't) Automatic adjustment according to background noise There are some opinions which it should be allowed in case that SPL is within range of limit value. Manual adjustment switch "Yes", "No", " Depends on category" are mixed.

Q5. Type of alarm sound Tonal sound is main stream. Broad Band Sound only exists in Germany, Switzerland and Australia. Human voice message exists in Japan, UK and China.

Sound level of alarm (Component) (Regarding Q1) Based on the sound attenuation formula, all of the answers are converted to 7.0m position SPL. The SPL should be about 50 - 80 dB at 7m distance except Spain. *1 Japan's answers are mounted level.

Are there complaints about reversing alarm sounds? Q7. Other safety device Back camera and sonar are popular in many countries. There are many favorable opinions on utilizing cameras, etc. Furthermore, RA should be treated as "option" if these safety devices are installed. Q8. Are there complaints about reversing alarm sounds? There are many complaints in Japan, Switzerland, Germany and Austria. In other countries, there is a few complaints regarding RA. It is supposed to be the numbers of vehicle mounted RA are few. (Same reason as Q2(a).)

Q9. Sound Pressure Level of present reversing alarm (Equipped with vehicle) Based on the sound attenuation formula, all of the answers are converted to 7.0m position SPL. Limit value when RA is mounted on vehicle is proposed by only Japan and Germany. To propose environmental friendly and safety limit value, further studies are required in near future.
