Eclipses When the moon’s shadow hits Earth or Earth’s shadow hits the moon, an eclipse occurs. There are 2 types of eclipses: solar (sun) eclipse & lunar.

Eclipses Notes: E

1 lunar revolution 27.3 Days 1 lunar rotation 27.3 Days Therefore: We always see the same side of the moon from earth

2 types of eclipses: 1. Lunar Earth gets in the way of the sun’s light reflecting off the moon. 2 parts to the shadow of a sphere 1. Umbra The dark center region 2. Penumbra Lighter cone shaped regions surrounding the umbra

Total Lunar Eclipse Entire moon travels inside the earth’s umbra Partial Lunar Eclipse At least part of the moon never gets into the umbra (stays in penumbra) Occur about once per year, b/c moon’s orbit is on a 5o incline Full moon phase Nighttime half of earth sees it

2. Solar Moon gets in the way of the sunlight that should be hitting the earth Partial Solar Eclipse Earthling is standing inside the moon’s penumbra Looks like dusk outside

Total Solar Eclipse Earthling is standing inside the moon’s umbra Looks like nighttime Temperature goes down Photosphere is totally blocked Must be in the “eclipse path” to see the eclipse Occurs: At new moon About once per year When earth and moon are level

Eclipse Path Shadow’s track on earth Must be standing inside it to see a solar eclipse
