Making Healthy Decisions Chapter One

Free Write: Why do you think the average lifespan increased in the 1900’s? List as many reasons you can think of. Why might Obesity reverse this upward trend regarding the average life expectancy in the US?

Vocabulary Health Life expectancy Quality of Life The overall well-being of your body, your mind and your relationship with other people Life expectancy The number of years a person expects to live Quality of Life Is the degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life

Vocabulary Goal Continuum Wellness is a result that a person aims for and works hard to reach Continuum is a gradual progression through many stages between one extreme and another Wellness is a state of high level health

Aspects of Health Physical Health-refers to how well your body functions. Mental and Emotional Health-state of being comfortable with yourself, with other and with your surrounding. Social Health-how well you get along with others.

Influence on health Heredity-all the traits that are passed biologically from parent to child Physical Environment-is all of the physical and social conditions that surround a person and can influence that person’s health Social Environment-includes that people you spend time with your family, friends, classmates, and other people in your community. Culture-is a beliefs and patterns of behavior that are shared by a group of people of people and passed from generation to generation.

Influences on health Media-are forms of communication that provide news and entertainment. Technology- Helps doctors detects health problems sooner and improve the quality of life Healthcare-includes medial services provided by doctors, nurses, dentists and therapist Behaviors-which become HABITS – is a behavior that repeats so often it become automatics.

Health Risk Factors: Uncontrollable Controllable Heredity (ie. Family history of disease like heart disease, diabetes, cancer) Genetics (Fair Skin, etc) Environment Controllable Level of Physical Activity Nutritional Value of Food ( intake of fat, sugar & salt) Use of Tobacco, Alcohol & Drugs Use of Protective Technology ie. Seat belts, smoke detectors Choice of Friends
