What is an operating system? An operating system is software that manages how hardware and software work together and talk to each other.

What does an operating system do? Controls basic functions: Scheduling tasks Running applications Controlling input and output devices

Some common operating systems: Before revealing, can students list some operating systems? Pictured left to right (Mac OS, iOS, Linux, Windows, Android, Windows Phone). Other operating systems could include: Ubuntu, Fedora, DragonFly BSD, ReactOS, Slackware, MorphOS

File Extensions A suffix consisting of a period and the last three or four characters after the name of the file. The file extension tells the operating system what type of program it needs to open, view, print, or edit a particular file.

Computer Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting You can solve many computer problems using simple problem solving techniques, also called troubleshooting. Here’s a list of basic troubleshooting questions: When did the computer last work properly? Has anything changed since then? Are you getting an error message? If yes, write it down so you can refer to it later. Does the problem device(s) have power? Are all the cables connected properly? Does restarting the computer help? Are there any Windows updates? Have you used the antivirus to check for viruses or malware?

Troubleshooting What can you do when you’ve tried all your troubleshooting techniques and you continue to have problems? 1. Search the Internet for a solution. Look for reliable sources. Use caution and only complete tasks you feel comfortable and safe doing. 2. Call, email, or chat with the manufacturer’s customer support.

Downloading Software Use caution when downloading files, including applications, from the Internet. Downloading from sources you cannot confirm or do not trust can put your computer and even your personal information at risk.
