Fish and seafood are abundant along the coast while beef is found inland and is expensive. Maafe Jollof rice Starchy foods like rice, yam, corn, and sweet potato are a staple in many west african countries because it is inexpensive and easy to grow. Starches provide carbohydrates and quick energy that is helpful in poorer countries. Fruits and vegetables are abundant in the tropical climates, so foods like avacado, mango, melon, tomato and onion are easy to come by. Fresh or dried fruit is often presented as dessert. Fish and seafood is the most common in these countries, along with chicken goat or pork. Cattle is more expensive.
