Chapter 2-2 Adding Integers Unit 1 Chapter 2-2 Adding Integers

Vocabulary: Additive Inverses – when you add two opposites, the sum is zero Example: 1 + (-1) = 0 -5 + 5 = 0

Adding Integers Rules Rule #1 – Same Sign Rule or also known as “Add and Keep” Rule - if you are adding two integers with the same sign, add both integers and keep the sign. Example: (-3) + (-5) = - 8 Rule #2 – Different Sign Rule – when adding two integers with different signs, subtract both integers and take the sign of the bigger (absolute value) integer Example: 9 + (-4)= = 9 – 4 = 5 (since the bigger integer is 9 and it’s positive, your answer is positive)

Practice Ex 1: 10 + 5= Ex 2: -9 + 5= Ex 3: (-5) + (-7) = Ex 4: 6 + (-11) = Ex 5: (-8) + (-20)= Let’s check our answers

Let’s check our answers! Ex 1: 10 + 5= 15 (same sign-add and keep!) Ex 2: -9 + 5= 9 – 5 = 4 (9 is the bigger integer (with the larger absolute value) and it’s negative so you’re answer is…) = - 4 Ex 3: (-5) + (-7) = -12 (same sign – add and keep!) Ex 4: 6 + (-11) = 11 – 6 = 5 (subtract both numbers. 11 is the bigger number (with the bigger absolute value and it is negative so your answer should be negative) = - 5 Ex 5: (-8) + (-20)= -28 (same sign – add and keep!)
