Introduction to design jig and Fixtures The world’s demand- producing products. CNC/CAM/FMS/JIT/SPC- modern manufacturing concept – dramatic changes and advanced. Cost down and profits up Time = Money = ? Introduction to design jig and Fixtures

BASIC TYPES AND FUNCTION OF JIG & FIXTURES Objective Objective Of Tool Design Identify The Source Of Specified Design Data

Purpose of tool design Tool design is the process of designing and developing the tool, methods, and technique necessary to improve manufacturing efficiency and productivity. It gives industry the machines and special tooling needed for today’s high-speed, high volume production. Tool design is an ever - changing , growing process of creative problem solving.

Tool design Objective Main objective is to lower manufacturing costs while maintaining quality and increased production. To accomplish this, tool design must satisfy the following objective: Provide simple, easy-to-operate tools for maximum efficiency. Reduced manufacturing expanses by producing part at the lowest possible cost. Design tools that consistently produce part of higher quality. Increase the rate of production with existing machine tools. Design the tool to make foolproof and to prevent improper use. Provide protection in the design of the tools for maximum safety of the operator. Select materials that will give adequate tool live.

Planning the design Part drawing -duplicate of part geometry that will be used to make the part.(solid Model) [ overall size & shape, type and condition of material used, type of machine operation, degree of accuracy, number of pieces, locating & clamping surface]. Production plan - List of manufacturing operations & sequence. Used this plan to assist the design. [Type & size machine tool/cutters, sequence operation, previous machining operations.] Alternative - determine the alternative solutions. [special tooling or existing, multiple spindle or single, the tool be single purpose or multi purpose, and etc]

Challenges to the tool designer The tool designer has many manufacturing responsibilities. In addition to technical design duties, the tool designer may be responsible for obtaining materials, toolroom supervision, and tool inspection. The tool designer should understand the extent of these additional duties. Design – tool designer is responsible for developing the drawings and sketches of the tool design ideas.

Requirements to become aTool designer To perform the functions of a tool designer, an individual must have the following skills: The ability to make mechanical drawings and sketches. An understanding of modern manufacturing methods , tools and technique. A creative mechanical ability An understanding of basic toolmaking methods. A knowledge of technical mathematics through practical trigonometry. CAD drafting skills. File management. Electronic communication skill. Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing GD&T.

Exercise 1 List 7 seven objectives of tool design. Explain with example of the plan drawing, production plan and additional. List the skill of tool designer.
