Optimal polar bodies angle for higher subsequent embryo viability: a pilot study  Qiong Zhang, M.D., Xiaoyue M. Guo, B.A., Yanping Li, M.D.  Fertility and Sterility  Volume 105, Issue 3, Pages 670-675.e2 (March 2016) DOI: 10.1016/j.fertnstert.2015.11.009 Copyright © 2016 American Society for Reproductive Medicine Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 The schematic diagram of polar body (PB) angle measurement, subsequent embryo quality and implantation outcome. Lines were drawn to connect the oocyte geometric center of the zygote with the two PBs. PB angle (α) was subtended by the two lines. The PB angles of the three zygotes are (A) 16.32°, (B) 38.13°, and (C) 124.61°, respectively from left to right. Their subsequent embryos quality were all grade A on day 3. After transfer, only the leftmost embryo implanted successfully. Figure 2 The flow of the study. A total of 116 patients were recruited. The polar body (PB) angles were measured in 454 two-pronucleated (2PN) zygotes. On day 3, 164 embryos were transferred into the uterus. Ultimately, all-or-none implantation took place in 129 embryos. Figure 3 Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of polar body angle for subsequent embryo implantation. The area under the ROC curve is 0.756 (95% confidence interval 0.674–0.838) and the cutoff value is 24.25°. The sensitivity is 64.8% and the specificity 73.2%. Supplemental Figure 1 The positive skew distribution of polar body (PB) angles. The PB angles showed a positive skew distribution with range from 10.11° to 157.02°. The median is 26.73° and the skew coefficient is 2.154.
