Glossary Aqiqa- Muslim naming ceremony when the baby’s hair is shaved and its weight in gold or silver is given to charity. Bismallah- the ceremony in some cultures when a Muslim child formally begins to learn about Islam. Hadith- sayings and action of the Prophet Muhammad(SAW) as recorded by his family and friends. Halal- that which is permitted or lawful. Iqamah- the call to stand up for prayer. Madrassah- Muslim school based at the mosque. Salah- One of the five pillars of Islam. The five daily prayers.

Head of the family whispers the adhan in the right ear and the Iqamah in the left ear. Mother ensures the home is halal. Muslim upbringing Children are taught to say Salah, read the Quran and the daily visit to the mosque. Aqiqa- 7 days after birth the baby is named. Khitan: boys are circumcised Madrassah 4 years into their life and they start formal education about Islam
