Analysis of Design Project

Deadlines: “Existing Game Analysis” Project Deadline written document: April 12th in class, printed! Deadline PowerPoint presentation: April 12th until noon (EST time) has to be e-mailed to me: munoz@cse.lehigh.edu No other changes are accepted once handed in Presentations will be made in class (plan 15 minutes) starting on April 12th Grades will be made by comparing the effort/thought put into it by the various groups START WORKING on IT TODAY!

Talking Points (1) Note: always justify your assertions by pointing to material from class/book Length: 20+ pages Describe the game: what it does kind of game: classify according to Artificial Intelligence perspective Overall game: meaningful play? Parts were meaningful play is really well done?

Talking Points (2) FSM. Draw the FSM for one of the “cool” encounters in the game Is it a game? Map the 5 elements of the definition of game to your specific game Game as system: Explain the 4 elements (attributes, etc) and 3 dimensions (formal, experiential, cultural) for the game Interactivity Map the anatomy of choice: answer the five questions for the game Parts were no meaningful play is achieved? Which of these questions was not appropriately considered by designer How would you “solve” this? Describe the magic circle for the game and the primary schemas Describe a subset of operational, constitutive and implicit rules of game

Talking Points (3) Game as Information Theory Systems: Any information redundancy? Any noise in information? Are these planned as part of the game design? Game as information systems: classify the information according to the four kinds of information discussed in class (known to all players, to one player, etc.) Games as cybernetic systems: Identify a feedback system in the game and present it

Talking points: Presentations How/who presents is up to you (mix is ok) Estimate time: 15 minutes Start by Introducing the game. Video clip is ok but not required Explain why you selected this game Describe your answer to the question “Is this a game?” from Slide # 4 Afterwards be selective: concentrate on “cool”, interesting, noteworthy (including “bad”) aspects of the design of your particular game But obviously must be a subset of what you wrote in the document Questions?
