Objective SWBAT describe differences between structures and methods of reproduction in plants and animals.

Take a look at your flower. What do you see?

Parts of a Flower

Reproductive Features of Flowers Flowers have male reproductive parts (stamen) and female reproductive parts (pistil). Animals only have male parts or female parts.

Check For Understanding What is the name of the male reproductive structure in a flower? Pistil Stamen Petal Stem

Sexual Reproduction in Flowers Pollen from a male stamen is carried to a female pistil (on the same flower or another flower). Pollen can be carried by wind or insects.

Check For Understanding Which statement correctly describes how flowers reproduce sexually? Male sex cells in the stamen are carried to a female egg in the pistil. Female sex cells in the stamen are carried to a male sex cell in the pistil. Female sex cells in the pistil are carried to male sex cells in the stamen. Male sex cells in the pistil are carried to female sex cells in the stamen.

Check For Understanding Which statement describes a major reproductive difference between plants and animals? Plants are producers and animals are consumers. Most animals are dormant in winter; most plants are not. Plants have special cell structures that animals do not have. Most plants have both male and female structures; most animals do not.

Asexual Reproduction in Flowers Plants can reproduce asexually: if you cut off a piece of the stem and re-plant it, it can grow into a new organism. Animals can only reproduce sexually.

Check For Understanding Which statement correctly describes a difference between prairie dogs and strawberry plants? Prairie dogs can reproduce sexually and asexually; strawberry plants can only reproduce sexually. Prairie dogs can reproduce sexually and asexually; strawberry plants can only reproduce asexually. Prairie dogs can reproduce asexually; strawberry plants can reproduce sexually and asexually. Prairie dogs can only reproduce sexually; strawberry plants can reproduce sexually and asexually.
