Chapter 1: Managers and Managing (You will need to read as assigned in syllabus) A manager is a person who is responsible for supervising the use of an organization’s resources to meet its goals. They may do this well or poorly. Plan - organize- lead-control (generally accepted def, with some reservations)

Harold Mintzberg: “P-O-L-C too simple”

Anyway, to keep it real…. The attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through Planning – goal selection, attainment strategies Organizing – assign responsibilities Leading - influence for results Controlling - monitor and correct (think of it as something like good parenting)

Still, we see shades of Mintzberg in the following image Level 1 – day to day dudes/dudettes oversee team of workers Level 2 – resource utilization – including Humans, efficiently and effectively Level 3 – Top level responsibilities – includes goal setting, verifications, etc.

Efficiency & Effectiveness:

Definitions Effective (adj.) – Adequate to accomplish a purpose; producing the intended or expected result. (ends) Efficient (adj.) – Performing or functioning in the best possible manner with the least waste of time and effort. (means)
