Natural and Field experiments Miss Minaker

Experimental methods Three types of experimental methods Lab study Field studies Natural/quasi experiments

Field Experiments A field experiment is similar to a lab experiment, but there are some differences Read the description on pg 137 and complete the boxes on the sheet

Field Experiments Read the example of a field study by Bickmann (1974) Identify the IV and the DV Explain why it is a field study.

Field Experiments Loftus and Palmer carried out a lab study into the accuracy of eyewitness testimony. How could they have investigated EWT using a field experiment?

Field Experiments Read through the strengths and weaknesses. Highlight the important information

Natural/Quasi Experiments Key features IV not under control of experimenter. Naturally occurring event Used when manipulation of the IV would be impractical or unethical.

Natural/Quasi Experiments Rad the example study by Charlton et al (2000) p147 Identify the IV and the DV Explain why it is a natural experiment.

Natural/Quasi Experiments Read through the strengths and weaknesses. Highlight the important information

Quasi vs. Natural Experiments Both terms used There is a difference Natural is when something has happened to the participants to make the two groups different Quasi is a naturally occurring variable You do not need to know the difference between natural and quasi experiments for AS, but it is still worth knowing!
