How can we split 10 into 2 groups? Record suggestions in an ordered list: 10 = 9 + 1, 10 = 8 + 2, etc. Are there any more? Show 8 and 2. Turn the coat hanger round to show 2 + 8. Turn the pegs back to show 8 + 2 again and then remove the last 2 pegs. What number sentence could we write? Record 10 – 2 = 8. Put the 2 pegs back on. Point to the 8 pegs. What if I took these off instead? What number sentence could we write? Repeat with 6 and 4, creating 10 – 4 and 10 – 6 Year 1
