Sustainable furniture as a service STRATA Sustainable furniture as a service Victor Strimfors, Katrine Hesseldahl, Matthieu Leroy Victor.strimfors@gmail.com

Innovation Design approach STRATA Innovation STRATA is a furniture service for landlords and an opportunity for tenants to feel at home when renting. STRATA deals with the problem of bulky post consumer waste by splitting furniture into layers. This allows for flexibility through modularity, customisation, smarter use of resources and new models of ownership. Design approach Design thinking and human centered design research within a circular economy framework. Interviews with users, participatory design workshops with users and experts, collaboration with other designers and prototyping in fablabs.

Relation to the urbanscape Scaling up prospects STRATA Relation to the urbanscape STRATA challenges the status quo of buying, using and throwing things away. It also responds to the contrast in thinking between long term property investment landlords and short term tenants. People´s lives are becoming increasingly fluid. Their living situations, jobs and even country of residence is changing frequently. They increasingly face the burden of moving, consuming large amounts of short lived furniture. This creates large amounts of bulky waste which normally ends up in landfills, causing great strain on the environment. Scaling up prospects STRATA needs a system of partnerships with stakeholders such as property developers, leasing partners, furniture providers and remanufacturing specialists. STRATA will start with small experiments to test the business model, service and logistics to learn and iterate.
