Objective SWBAT describe characteristics of organisms in kingdom Archaebacteria.

Kingdom Archaebacteria Archaebacteria are single-celled. Unicellular Archaebacteria are prokaryotes. Their cell does not have a nucleus. Some are autotrophs (produce their own energy); some are heterotrophs (get energy from consuming or decomposing other organisms). Archaebacteria live in extreme places!

Check For Understanding What is an autotroph? A car. An organism that gets energy from eating other organisms. An organism that gets energy from decomposing other organisms. An organism that produces its own energy.

Halobacterium salinarum

Pyrococcus furiosus

Colony of Methanosarcina mazei

What are two things you see in this diagram that let you know this organism could be in kingdom Archaebaceria?

Check For Understanding Which statement below about organisms in kingdom Archaebacteria is false? Archaebacteria are made of only one cell. Some archaebacteria make their own food, and some archaebacteria get food from other organisms. The DNA of archaebacteria is contained in a nucleus. Archaebacteria live in extreme environments.

Types of Archaebacteria Heat lovers Salt lovers Methane makers Live in ocean vents and hot springs. Can survive temperatures of more than 250oC. Live in environments with lots of salt, like the Dead Sea and Great Salt Lake. Live in swamps and animal intestines. Give off methane gas.

Hot springs

Deep sea vents

The Dead Sea

The Great Salt Lake

Swamp

Check For Understanding Which of the following is probably not a place you would find archaebacteria? In a hot vent at the bottom of an ocean. On top of your kitchen counter. In very salty water, like in the Dead Sea. In a swamp.
