What are the uses of rock?

Lesson Aims ALL – to know what chalk, granite and limestone are used for MOST – to know a case study use of each SOME – to reflect on the impacts of rock extraction

Today’s key terms Cement Syncline Aquifer Honeypot

Case studies Granite – farming on Dartmoor Chalk – the London Basin Chalk Aquifer Limestone – tourism and recreation in Malham

Granite Farming Over the last 5, 000 years farming has been the main land use on Dartmoor 90% of the National Park is farmed Farmers are paid to maintain the granite stone walls

London Basin Chalk Aquifer The rocks underneath London form a basin called a syncline. Water soaks into the chalk and percolates through the chalk to form a giant underground reservoir called an aquifer For hundreds of years this underground reservoir has supplied London with its water The aquifer is carefully managed by the Environment Agency to ensure its use is sustainable

Malham Cove Stick a copy of the OS map in the centre of your page You are going to annotate information around the map The area is criss-crossed with footpaths including the long distance footpath known as the Pennine Way Nature tourism – flowers and birds Adventurous outdoor pursuits – climbing The area around Malham is a particular focus for tourism and is referred to as a honeypot site What might the problems of tourism be in places like Malham?

Economic uses of different landscapes Working in groups of 3 or 4 – you will have to assign different roles and tasks to complete all the work Create a booklet informing people of the uses of rocks Outline the uses of the 3 main rock types: chalk, granite and limestone Outline the positives and negatives of the uses of each rock Outline which type of people might be for and against the uses of each rock. Your booklet must be completed in lesson time. You will have one hour in a computer suite next week to finish off or print things.

Tourism on Dartmoor From the back of your information packs answer the following questions on lined paper on tourism on Dartmoor: Activity 1 (a, b, c and d) Activity 2 (a, b and c) Activity 5 Bring answers to next weeks lesson

Internet Research Homework Now complete your own individual internet research on these 3 topic areas to include images, facts and maps and any other information on how the rocks are used in these areas.

Lesson Aims ALL – to know what chalk, granite and limestone are used for MOST – to know a case study use of each SOME – to reflect on the impacts of rock extraction
