Charles Darwin and Natural Selection Evolution 1 Charles Darwin and Natural Selection

There once lived a man named Charles Darwin…

He was fascinated with the world…

One day he hopped on the beagle

And set sail for the Galapagos Islands

5 years later he arrived…

There he studied sea turtles…

…and finches

He noticed that on different islands, the animals looked different

Why do these animals look different based on their location? He asked himself… Why do these animals look different based on their location?

So he did a little more research

And found that differences helped the individuals survive in different environments.

He used his research to write a book…

In which he said Natural Selection was how it was done…

So just what is natural selection, Mr. Darwin?

Umm…how about in a language we can understand. Well natural selection is the idea that similar organisms become different because of their environment. Different traits are preferred in different environments, so individuals with those traits survive and those that don’t have those traits don’t.

Natural Selection requires 3 things… He continued on… Natural Selection requires 3 things… Struggle for Existence Differences in fitness Traits that are inheritable Do you know what these things are?

Describe why it’s adaptations are suited for its environment. Good! Now give this a try… Working with a partner, create your own orgamism and a habitat that it is suited for. Describe why it’s adaptations are suited for its environment. I can’t wait to discuss these tomorrow!
