End of Key Stage Two SATs Meeting for Parents 03.03.19

Aims of this meeting: To share information about how the Year 6 children will be assessed at the end of this year To share the SATs timetable and arrangements To share information about each of the SATs tests: Mathematics, Reading and Vocabulary, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar To explore previous test materials To discuss how writing will be assessed and share exemplification materials To share ways in which you can help your child at home

Teacher Assessment Alongside the SAT testing, teachers will conduct assessments based on interim frameworks The frameworks have been provided by the DfE to support teachers in making robust and accurate judgements for pupils at the end of key stage 2 in 2019 Interim frameworks set out the standard(s) a pupil will be assessed against at the end of key stage two for Writing and Science In Writing and Science, a pupil must consistently demonstrate attainment of ALL of the statements within the standard If ALL statements not evidenced, the standard has not been met

SATs is a term people use to refer to End of Key Stage 2 Assessments; It lasts for four days beginning on Monday 13th May 2019 and ending on Thursday 16th May 2019; Children will sit the following SATs papers: - Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (Paper 1) – Monday 13th May 2019; - Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (Paper 2) – Monday 13th May 2019; - Reading – Tuesday 14th May 2019; - Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic) – Wednesday 15th May 2019; - Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning) – Wednesday 15th May 2019; - Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning) – Thursday 16th May 2019. Writing is assessed using evidence collected by your child’s teacher throughout Year 6, so there is no Year 6 SATs writing test. *The key stage 2 tests will be taken on set dates unless your child is absent, in which case they may be able to take them up to 5 school days afterwards.

Assessment of Writing There is no SAT for writing Writing is assessed by the teacher over a period of time across a range of genre against the interim statements provided Previously, to demonstrate that pupils have met a standard within this interim framework, teachers would have to have evidence that a pupil demonstrates attainment of ALL of the statements within that standard and ALL the statements in the preceding standard(s). This year, there is a more flexible approach. Pupils still should meet all the statements, however, teachers can now use their discretion to ensure that a particular weakness does not prevent an accurate judgement of a pupil’s attainment overall being made. Open to external moderation from the Local Authority

Assessment of Writing – What is independence? Writing that is assessed can be part of their normal classroom practice – not cold tasks or exam style experiences. Discussion of ideas and immersion in vocabulary is all part of this. Use of dictionaries, working walls and word banks is fine as long as children are making the choice to refer to the resource. The key point about independence is that children are making their own choices about how to apply the things they have been taught Impact on marking

SATs National curriculum tests Designed to provide information about how your child is progressing, compared to children the same age nationally They are not qualifications – they do not affect your child’s future options at school Results are used to ensure schools are teaching their pupils essential knowledge and skills that are the early building blocks The tests are based on the new national curriculum, which your child has been taught since September 2014

SATs Timetable 2019 The key stage two test are timetabled from Monday 13th May 2019 to Thursday 16th May 2019.

Reporting Arrangements Results will be reported as scaled scores Results will indicate whether your child has: met the expected standard not met the expected standard Raw scores are converted to scale scores A score of 100 will represent the national expected standard The scale will have a lower end point somewhere below 100 and an upper end point above 100. Last year, a score of 110 represented ‘Greater Depth’ within the standard You will receive test results for your child in English reading, English grammar, punctuation and spelling and mathematics. There is no test for English writing; this will be reported using teacher assessment. You will also receive separate teacher assessment judgements for writing and science.

Reporting Arrangements On publication of the test results in July 2019: A child awarded a scaled score of 100 is judged to have met the ‘national expected standard’ in the area judged by the test. A child awarded a scaled score of more than 110 is judged to have achieved greater depth within the national expected standard and demonstrated a higher than expected knowledge of the curriculum for their age. A child awarded a scaled score of less than 100 is judged to have not yet met the national standard and is still working towards the expectation for their age.

How we are supporting your child in the lead up to SATs Regularly assure the children that as long as they try their best, that is all that counts Ensure children are actively involved and engaged in their learning Non-negotiables Timetable changes Extra support and, at times, smaller class sizes for mathematics, reading and spelling, punctuation and grammar Example Papers Provide children with homework to consolidate learning and support children with homework they find challenging Tuesday evening booster class Reading Plus Breakfast club will take place the week beginning Monday 7th May and will run until Thursday 17th May.

How you can help your child at home: First and foremost, assure your child that there is nothing to worry about and they just need to try their best Attendance A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast! Water bottles Support your child with homework and organising time to complete homework tasks Read regularly with your child and question them about what they are reading Practise times tables and talk about fractions using real-life examples

Mind-set Children’s mind-sets - how they perceive their abilities - play a key role in their motivation and achievement. Children who believe their intelligence can be developed (a growth mind-set) perform better than those who believe their intelligence is fixed (a fixed mind-set).

As ever, we appreciate your continued support. Thank you for coming. As ever, we appreciate your continued support.
