Midterm Review

Twelfth Night Shakespearean Comedy Cities: 1. Illyria: setting of Twelfth Night 2. Messaline: place where Viola/Cesario and Sebastian are originally from.

Characters Viola/Cesario: believes her brother is dead as the play begins Disguises herself as a male and works for Duke Orsino. Falls in love with Duke Orsino Ends up marrying Duke Orsino at the conclusion of the play. Her change of clothing symbolizes her deception of other characters in the play. Represents mature and unselfish love (Duke)

Sebastian: Brother of Viola/Cesario He is not dead, though it is believed he died at sea. First refers to himself as Roderigo. Is friends with Antonio – who provides Sebastian with his “purse” and a place to stay. Ends up married to Olivia

Olivia: niece of Sir Toby Belch Is being courted by Duke Orsino (she doesn’t like him) Allows the Duke’s servant (Cesario) to continue to see her because she loves the servant (Cesario). Marries Sebastian believing it is Cesario.

Maria: servant to Olivia Takes part in playing a trick on Malvolio Has handwriting that is identical to Olivia’s Writes a note convincing Malvolio that Olivia loves him Malvolio: believes that Olivia loves him Dresses to impress her (yellow stockings, cross gartered) Vows Revenge! when he realizes he has been tricked

Duke Orsino: will not stop in his pursuit of Olivia Ends up married to Viola/Cesario Represents immature, selfish, and lustful love Feste: The Clown Though he is a clown, he provides intelligence to the play. He pretends to be Sir Topas when speaking to Malvolio in the dark.

Wuthering Heights Setting: Moors of England Begins in the present in 1801 Novel is introduced by Mr. Lockwood Nelly becomes the narrator of the novel Mr. Lockwood writes down her story in his journal. Tells the story of the Earnshaw and Linton families.

Characters Catherine: daughter of Mr. Earnshaw Loves Heathcliff, but marries Edgar Has a daughter named Catherine, but dies after the birth. Hindley: son of Mr. Earnshaw Envies Heathcliff for being the favorite. Marries Frances and has Hareton. Frances dies. Nelly raises Hareton during his early years. Nelly: servant who grows up with Catherine and Hindley Likes Heathcliff after she cares for him when he is ill

Isabella and Edgar Linton: siblings Isabella marries Heathcliff Flees from Wuthering Heights, goes to London, gives birth to Linton, and dies 12 years later. Edgar marries Catherine Loves Catherine though the love is not returned. Raises young Catherine until his death

Young Catherine: Protected by her father. Does not leave the property of Thrushcross Grange as a child. Later leaves in her desire to see Penistone Crags. Ends up at Wuthering Heights with Heathcliff and Hareton. Marries Linton and then Hareton (both her cousins).

Revenge Hindley hates Heathcliff Mr. Earnshaw dies and Hindley makes Heathcliff a servant. Heathcliff and Catherine are no longer allowed to be friends. Hindley ends up in financial trouble and allows Heathcliff to return to Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff makes Hareton a servant following the death of his father. **Hindley makes Heathcliff a servant – Heathcliff makes Hareton (Hindley’s son) a servant.** **Heathcliff and Hareton both have their educations taken away from them.**

Death When Catherine dies: Edgar has her buried in the churchyard overlooking the Moors that she loved. When Edgar dies, he wants to be buried next to Catherine. Heathcliff removes the side of Catherine’s coffin and will have his removed as well so they can decompose together and be together in death.

Ending: At the end of the novel, the following characters are dead: Catherine Edgar Linton Heathcliff Catherine and Hareton will marry and move to Thrushcross Grange.
