Rain- Precipitation that is liquid water Sleet- Precipitation made when rain falls through freezing air and turns into ice. Snow- Precipitation caused when water vapor turns directly into ice and forms ice crystals. Hail- Round pieces of ice formed when frozen rain is coated with water and refreezes. Tornado- A fast-spinning spiral of wind that touches the ground. Hurricane- A large tropical storm that has winds of at least 74 miles per hour.

1. What causes rain to become sleet? Rain falls through a very cold pocket of air before it reaches the ground. This freezes the rain into ice. 2. What causes severe weather? Energy from the sun 3. How is a tornado different from a hurricane? Tornadoes are much smaller than hurricanes. Hurricanes form over water, but tornadoes can form over land or water. 4. The winds of a hurricane spin around the calm center of the storm called the “eye.” 5. What causes flooding during a hurricane? Rain and storm surge cause flooding during a hurricane. 6. How might a severe storm affect you? Evacuate, injured by flooding or down power lines and trees.
