What are the 3 main views of deafness? medical Social Cultural-linguistic

The medical view Parents and people with the hard of hearing or deaf child are often discouraged from using sign language. biggest failure is considered the lack of regard for deaf people and their community. Many deaf children struggle with their fluency in asl and English.

The social view focuses on gaining access into the general society and inclusion for individuals provides advantages for deaf people such as : 1-flashing light doorbells 2- speech telephones 3- fm systems.

Cultural linguistic view Focuses on recognizing deaf people as a minority culture group with their own natural language.

Gallaudet university Signed into existence in 1864. Abraham Lincoln signed the charter for the school to be open. 1943- famous men’s basketball team called the five ironmen

ICED CONFERENCE (MILAN, ITALY) AS A RESULT OF THIS CONFERENCE, SIGN LANGUAGE WAS BANNED FROM DEAF CHILDREN’S EDUCATION

In the 1960’S, ASL WAS FINALLY RECOGNIZED AS A “REAL/BONA FIDE” LANGUAGE. WHEN YOU IDENTIFY A PERSON IN ASL, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS USE CHARACTERISTICS THAT DISTINGUISH THE PERSON FROM OTHERS. WHEN DESCRIBING CLOTHES AND ACCESSORIES, YOU SIGN AS IF YOU WERE WEARING THEM, AND IN A NEUTRAL PLACE IN FRONT OF YOU.

TO FIGURE OUT THE SIGN FOR AN ENGLISH WORD THAT HAS MULTIPLE MEANINGS, YOU NEED TO DETERMINE THE CONTEXT. EVERY WORD IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE DOES NOT HAVE A CORRESPONSING SIGN.

SIGNING NUMBERS AND YEARS For years ending in 01-09: 3RD DIGIT- 4TH DIGIT- SIGNED individually
