Sex-linked traits. Sex chromosomes carry genes that code for traits other than gender. Traits determined by genes on the X chromosome are called sex-linked.

Pipe Cleaner Babies CLARIFICATION

Lab The Pipe cleaners represent the chromosomes The beads on the pipe cleaners represent alleles (forms of genes) The pink pipe cleaners are X chromosomes The blue pipe cleaner is a Y chromosome Remember humans have 44 autosomes and 2 sex- chromosomes All females are homologues but males X and Y are not

Shows Female and Male Alleles, Genotypes and the key shows phenotypes Note: All chromosomes are homologous for the female and the male, except the X and Y for the male. The X Y are not homologues and the alleles do not work together.

Difference between Autosomal and Sex-linked traits Questions: Can both the female and male be carriers for blue eyes? Can both be carriers for hemophilia?

Why can women but not men be carriers for sex-linked disorders? Woman have homologous pairs of X chromosomes that work together with genotype and phenotype Males have an X and a Y: not homologous Thus, no corresponding/matching allele to mask the trait on the X Look at images from earlier in notes

Why do son’s and not daughters inherit a sex-linked trait? (generally) No corresponding/matching allele for males to mask the trait on the X

Comparing hemophilia and sickle cell anemia

Autosomal Inheritance (pairs 1-22) Both males and females carriers & Gender inheritance equal Sex-linked traits (XX and XY) Only females carriers Males inherit traits more often Females inherit mutation from father What is the difference between sex-linked traits and autosomal trait inheritance?
