Common Core Standards: Thursday, April 18, 2019 Common Core Standards: RL.11-12.2, RL.11-12.5, and SL.11-12.1 Aim: How can we analyze the symbolism of fences, the theme of the American Dream, and the resolution in Act 2, Scenes 4 and 5 in August Wilson’s play, Fences? Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) How do you feel about the resolution/ending of Wilson’s play, Fences? Explain. 2.) If you could create a Part 2 for Fences, what would you include and why? Objective: Students will be able to analyze the symbolism of fences and the characters’ pursuits of the American Dream in Wilson’s play, Fences.

Common Core Standards: RL.11-12.2, RL.11-12.5, and SL.11-12.1 Thursday, April 18th, 2019 Aim: How can we analyze the symbolism of fences, the theme of the American Dream, and the resolution in Act 2, Scenes 4 and 5 in August Wilson’s play, Fences? Objective:: Students will be able to analyze the symbolism of fences, the theme of the American Dream, and the resolution in Act 2, Scenes 4 and 5 in the play, Fences. Agenda A.) Do Now: Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. C.) Work Period: -Work on the final T-Chart for Act 2, Scenes 4 and 5. Remember, you need two quotes (in SPA format) to support the fences (barriers/divisions/obstacles) in the play and two quotes (in SPA format) to support the characters’ pursuits of the American Dream. -With a partner, create Fences: Part 2. Create dialogue, stage directions and a captivating plot. It should be a minimum of one page (handwritten or typed). D.) Reflections: What were your impressions of the play’s ending? What do you believe was the playwright’s message to his audience?
