Learning Objectives What I’m looking for… Learn what ‘gridding’ is and how to use this drawing techniques to aid the success of your outcomes. Learn to use gridding to draw an accurate self-portrait. Learn to render three-dimensional qualities using a range of pencil tones. Learn to generate highlights using an eraser. What I’m looking for… An understanding about gridding and how it can be used to create successful and accurate drawings. An ability to grid accurately. An ability to draw your self-portrait accurately with gridding. An enhanced ability to use tone to render 3D qualities.

1) Equip yourself with a 30cm ruler and sharp pencil. 5 minutes 1) Equip yourself with a 30cm ruler and sharp pencil. 2) Collect your black and white photograph. 3) Draw a grid measuring 2cm squares over your photograph

4) Now take a sheet of A4 white cartridge paper. 5) Draw exactly the same size grid in the centre of the paper BUT do it with light lines. 6) Write A,B,C,D… across the top and 1,2,3,4… down the side A B C D E F G H I 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11

60 minutes Follow the instructions that you have just been guided through to start to draw your self-portrait accurately using gridding.

10 minutes Once you have drawn your portrait out accurately in LINE you must then rub out all the grid lines…be careful not to rub away your drawing though! Now watch a teacher demonstration to learn about adding tone effectively.

120 minutes Begin to add tone to your portrait, a little at a time, to build up the variations and to create a sense of three-dimensions. You will also need to use your eraser to take away some tones to reveal highlights.

5 minutes Turn the back of your book and write ‘tonal self-portrait’ onto your ‘Self-reflection, consolidation, evaluation and target setting’ sheet. Now complete each section thinking about the success of your drawing and what difficulties you encountered and how you overcame them.
