Compression Obsession By: Tony Cranmore, Adam Kennedy, Charles Mitchell, and Chris Earwood

The Team

Objective Our goal was to lift a 1 kilogram mass to a height of 1 meter in as close to 10 seconds as possible. We were to accomplish this spending less than $20 on materials.

Overview We basically built our project around a water bottle. We used duct tape and (foam material) to increase our coefficient of kinetic friction. The increased friction force allowed the mass to be lifted slowly along with the compression inside of the PVC pipe. This allowed us to get as close as possible to the time requirements.

Conversions Mouse trap converted from elastic potential to kinetic energy. Mass of bottle loses its potential energy to the other mass that was lifted.

Compression Obsession!!!

Conclusions As a result from experimentation with the size of mass inside the bottle and amount of duct tape added we were able to to have our system get fairly close to the time requirements.
