Presentation transcript:

A closer look at the physical property of Density Let’s review 1. What is mass? Mass is the amount of matter in substance. It is measured using a triple beam balance. The unit of measure is the gram/kilogram.

2. What is volume? Volume is the amount of space that a substance takes ups. It is measured using different methods. 1. Liquid Volume is measured using a graduated cylinder. The unit is mL. 2. Regular Solid Volume is measured using cubic units, L X W X H. The unit is cm³.

3. Irregular solids volume are measured using water displacement 3. Irregular solids volume are measured using water displacement. Using graduated cylinder and the amount of water is displaced by an object. - Units mL converted to cm³ Density is a comparison of the amount of matter in a given space. Compare grams to mL or cm³. Mass ÷ Volume = Density Water has a density of 1.0 g/cm³(mL) If an object has a density greater than 1.0 g/mL it will sink in water. If an object has a density less than 1.0 g/mL it will float in water.
