Wednesday, January 23rd and 30th English II Wednesday, January 23rd and 30th

Agenda—You’ve got 3 minutes SSR—did you fill out your reading log? Remember! Points for the week on Friday—35 pages and weekly report! Social Media Quick Write The Pros and Cons of Social Media Articles Synthesis Frame

Quick Write: 3 minutes Think about your personal beliefs on social media. How do you feel social media impacts social relationships? Does social media help people get more done or does it make them lazy? Do you think that social media impacts the way that users learn? In what way? In a well organized paragraph (no fewer than 5 complete sentences), give a detailed account of your beliefs on social media—support it with examples! Think on paper!

The pros and cons of social media As a class, we will read the articles “Social Networking Benefits Validated” and “Are Social Media Creating the Laziest Generation?” Remember the work we’ve done with claims. What is it? What do you need to make a sound and valid claim?

Article 1 Look at the title. What information does it provide? What predictions can you make? After reading the first chunk, can we determine the author’s claim? If so, write it on your handout.

Article 1 Continued From the first third of the article, choose ONE DETAIL that supports the claim FROM THE ARTICLE!!!! Supporting Detail: Social Media develops technical skills. Now: At your tables, find a quote from the section to support it.

Supporting Details 2 and 3 As a group, determine a second supporting detail. Find a quote from the second section to support it. Finally, choose a third supporting detail and a quote to support it. It’s about parents.

Writing Frame On the backside of your worksheet write a well-organized paragraph (using the frame). Do you believe that social media is a benefit or a drawback in today’s society? Include at least 3 quotes from the articles to support your claim. This worksheet is worth 30 points in the formative assessment category and is due when you walk in the door Friday.
