Early Colonies American Colonies Supplementary Chapter 1 Material

Jamestown First Colonial attempt after Roanoke An English Foothold in North America England did not want to risk the money to start a colony, so they granted charters Permission slip to colonize an area – king collects taxes from that charter

Jamestown

Jamestown Problems nobleman settlers – no women or children consumed by their gold search 38 out of 150 died the first winter 600 women and children came in the spring Famine and war with the Powhatan 60 survived through that winter

Jamestown The Fix New leaders – very strict – “He that will not work, shall not eat” – John Smith His leadership helped the English settlement of Jamestown survive grew tobacco – “brown gold”

Indentured Servants Indentured Servants People who moved to America, agreeing to work a plot of land for 4-7 years to pay for that passage. African Americans were brought in as indentured servants in 1619, and after 4-7 years received land and freedom

Clashes with Native Americans As colonist needed more land, so they took land from the Native Americans The English had made a law forbidding the Irish to marry or even dress like an Englishman – they treated the Native Americans the same. Native Americans led many successful raids on Virginia’s colony and eventually cost the Virginia company so much money that they turned the colony over to the king. It became a Royal Colony.

Bacon’s Rebellion While chasing Doeg warriors Bacon killed 14 friendly Sadquhannock and executed 5 of their chiefs during a peace conference. This started a war between these Native American groups and settlers.

Bacon’s Rebellion Berkeley refused to help Bacon. Bacon was one of Berkely’s governors Bacon created his own army without Berkeley’s approval Berkeley called it an illegal army Bacon marched on Jamestown and set the town on fire. Fled on ship, and died a month later due to illness.
