Tilting Trike With User-Controlled Stability Anthony Pierson, Mechanical Engineering Dr. Andrew Dressel, Faculty Advisor
Overview Narrow-Track, Tilting, Recumbent Tricycle Analysis Physical Testing Conclusions Next steps
Narrow-Track, Tilting, Recumbent Tricycle “Narrow-track” means it doesn’t take up the whole bike path/road. “Tilting” makes it stable at high speeds even with a narrow axle track. “Recumbent” makes it comfortable to ride, reduces air drag, and allows for a full enclosure. “Tricycle” means you can ride easily at low speed and stop without putting your feet down.
Analysis Unstable Stable
Physical Testing
Conclusions Kinematic analysis verified by physical testing Tricycle exhibits two distinct modes (stable and unstable) with semi- stability during the transition Resulting design carries a provisional patent
Next Steps Derive equations of motion for the tilting trike Perform physical testing to validate the derived equations of motion Implement a truly user-controlled bell crank with mechanical actuation Begin to design a new vehicle that will offer better aerodynamics, handling, comfort, and adjustability
