EFFECTS OF PLATE TECTONICS

Effects of Plate Tectonics Plate Tectonics is the basic mechanism that is responsible for processes that build up the Earth’s Surface or CONSTRUCIVE PROCESSES. Three topics related to constructive processes will be examined: Deformation Earthquakes Volcanoes

DEFORMATION Deformation (Chapter 7, pages 150 – 167) Deformation: The bending, tilting, or breaking of the Earth’s surface due to stress. Two basic types of deformational structures Faults Folds The type of deformational structure formed is dependent on whether the rock will bend or break. Breaks (Brittle) – Faults Ductile (Bends) - Folds
