Realism Bellringer #1 2-22-13 Directions: Start this on a new sheet of paper. Use your notes on Realism to help you answer the following questions. What is Realism? List at least one way in which Realism is different from Romanticism. (Hint: use the chart from the notes.) List the four factors that lead to the rise of Realism. List two characteristics of Realist literature. (See “Realistic Literature Will…” on your notes.) Today’s Target: I can recognize the characteristics of Realism in a work of literature.

Realism Bellringer #2 2-25-13 Explain how Walt Whitman was a transition figure from Romanticism to Realism. Define ethos, pathos, and logos. Today’s Target: I can identify logos and pathos in a text.

Realism Bellringer #3 2-26-13 Why did Frederick Douglass receive his first whipping from Mr. Covey? What techniques does Mr. Covey use to control the slaves at his plantation? Interpret this quote: “ the dark night of slavery closed in upon me; and behold a man transformed into a brute” (565). Today’s Target: I can identify logos and pathos in a text.

Realism Bellringer #4 2-27-13 In your double entry journals, you pulled examples of pathos and logos from Douglass’s Narrative. Now, explain how Douglass establishes ethos (credibility) using both logos and pathos. Explain how all three of these persuasive techniques support the author’s purpose. Today’s Target: I can analyze texts for their Romantic and Realistic characteristics.

Realism Bellringer #5 2-28-13 Why does Lincoln start his Gettysburg Address by referencing 1776 (“four score and seven years ago”)? What is the most common type of question on the ACT English test? Today’s Target: I can read, understand, and visualize the text.

Realism Bellringer #6 3-1-13 Why is Peyton Farquhar being hanged? How much time actually passes between the opening scene and the closing lines? List three things that Peyton Farquhar imagines. Today’s Target: I can identify foreshadowing in a text.

Realism Bellringer #7 3-4-13 1. List three helpful tips you can do to help yourself before the ACT and/or while taking the ACT. Today’s Target: I can read, understand, and visualize the text. *************************** March 21-23 @7:00 pm March 24 @ 2:00 pm Students $8 Adults $10

Realism Bellringer #8 3-7-13 Directions: Translate the following quotes from Huck Finn from their dialects into Standard American English. Huck: “Pap he hadn’t been seen for more than a year, and that was comfortable for me; I didn’t want to see him no more. He used to always whale me when he was sober and could get his hands on me…” Jim: “Doan’ hurt me – don’t! I hain’t ever done no harm to a ghos’. I awluz liked dead people, en done all I could for ‘em. You go en git in de river agin, whah you b’longs, en doan’ do nuffin to Ole Jim, ‘at ‘uz awluz yo’ fren.” Today’s Target: I can identify the characteristics of Regionalism.
