Root, Prefix, Suffix RPS System

The root is the main part of the word to which other parts can be attached. Example: biology Root = bio = life Biology = the study of life. Example #2: Biography Biography = a book about someone’s life Roots

More Examples: Geo = earth Micro = small Opt = eye Phobia = fear Phon = hear Try to think of some words with these root words. What are their meanings? Note: Not all roots will be at the beginning of the word. For example: “telephone” includes the root “phon.” Roots

Note: A suffix often changes the part of speech of the word it’s affixed to. For example: The root word of teacher is teach. The suffix is –er. Teach = verb Teacher = noun Suffix

Holidays, other assignments, or testing could disrupt it, but we are going to strive to stay relatively consistent to do the following: 1) Receive a worksheet on Monday for the week. Worksheet will include 6 words that have roots, prefixes, and affixes, and you will focus primarily on analyzing the word for roots and prefixes. 2) Practice using the words on Wednesday. Work in pairs to analyze a text and determine word meanings based on roots and prefixes. 3) Take a quiz on Fridays to assess the roots and prefixes analyzed. RPS Schedule
