Vesicles were loaded with 150 mmol l−1 mannitol and 20 mmol l−1 Hepes, at pH 7.0. The outside control medium contained 20 μmol l−1 ZnSO4, 150 mmol l−1 mannitol and 20 mmol l−1 Hepes. The experimental medium consisted of the control medium with the addition of 1 mmol l−1 reduced GSH and 2 mmol l−1 DTT.
