Activity 11 Recommendation on Sustainable Hunting and the Review and Possible Revision of the Sustainable Hunting Initiative (SHI)

Short description of the activity Process for adopting the Recommendation on use of sustainable hunting guide (fina-lising the form / content of the document, then formal adoption by the Commission) Extension of SHI to other areas of hunting (e.g. large carnivores) and to angling in order to promote greater engagement of hunting community and broader wildlife recreational users to nature conservation objectives

Outputs/Deliverables: Adoption of Commission Recommendation on sustainable hunting Awareness raising actions, discussion documents on extending SHI and related contacts with broad range of stakeholders

How Member States involved? Consultation with MS on implementation of Recommendation and activities undertaken for SHI extension. Member States to be consulted on extension of SHI and involved in conference

Next steps… Service contract 2007-2009 Promotion of Natura 2000 in the community of wildlife recreational users (hunters & anglers) Awarness-raising measures among hunting community and further promotion of Natura 2000 in EU-27 Assessment of current SHI (strenghts and weaknesses)

Preparation of extension of SHI to non-bird species and to engage other wildlife recreational users (anglers)

Conference in 2009 To address relation between hunting and species and habitat conservation To possibly include the signing of an extended SHI
